A 17-year-old who cracked an egg on the head of the controversial politician Fraser Anning has been immortalized in a mural on Melbourne’s Hosier Lane.
William Connolly, known as ‘Egg Boy’, found himself the center of international attention over the weekend after he cracked an egg on the head of Queensland senator Fraser Anning.
Connolly’s protest came after a widely-condemned statement released by the former One Nation member blaming Muslim immigration for the Christchurch terror attack.
Friday’s terror attack has left 50 dead and dozens more still injured.
Following his act of defiance, tributes to the 17-year-old have come in several forms, from prominent musicians offering him free tickets to their shows for life, to a crowdfunding page which has raised more than $43,000 for any legal fees and “more eggs”.
Connolly has reportedly promised to donate much of the money to Christchurch charity efforts.
Now, Egg Boy has taken his place on the walls of Melbourne’s famous Hosier Lane.
Artist Van T Rudd, who is Kevin Rudd’s nephew, recreated in the paint the exact moment egg met head.
“If you’re on your way to work in Melbourne CBD this morning (March 18th, 2019), here’s a gift for you in Hosier Lane,” the artist said on his website.
“This mural just HAD to be done! A tribute to #eggboy and his glorious response to Australian politician #fraseranning ‘s support of extreme right-wing terror.”
On Sunday, Connolly shared a video message about the incident, during which he was slapped by Anning and held down by his supporters, saying he has “no regrets”.
“Don’t egg politicians, you’ll get tackled by 30 bogans at the same time, I learned the hard way,” he said on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Anning stood by his Christchurch remarks during a press conference on Monday.
“I said that countries that allow Muslim immigration invariably have escalations in crime and terrorist attacks. As far as I’m concerned, that is a statement of fact,” he told reporters in Brisbane.
“He (the boy) got a slap across the face which is what his mother should have given him long ago because he has been misbehaving badly.”
The new mural’s artist is no stranger to Hosier Lane or making a political statement.
Earlier this month, Rudd slammed Scott Morrison’s support of the coal industry and condemnation of Australian students striking in protest of climate change inaction.
