Eight adorable terriers caught and killed over 700 huge rats in just seven hours!
Pig farmers contacted the pack of 8 Norfolk Terriers after rodents invaded and started eating food stocks, posing a danger to livestock.
The small pooches worked for seven hours and killed over 700 rodents – the number surprised even their owners, who offer a free pest control service in the South East.
This is the biggest haul of vermin the Suffolk and Norfolk Rat Pack ever terminated. The dogs are trained to catch and kill vermin and are owned by the group who travel around the region to get rid of pests.
34-year-old Ed Cook who manages the service said the group is dedicated to promoting traditional hunting techniques.
In the UK, hunting rats is legal and Ed believes that this method is more humane than killing rodents with poison.
“This is what the dogs are bred for. It is in their DNA to hunt,” Ed said. “We don’t really have to train them because it’s their instinct to catch and kill rats.
“All dogs will play fetch but these dogs will go to extreme lengths to catch the rats.
“Once they are given the exposure to the rats they chase them down automatically. It’s ingrained in their DNA.
“Some of these rats were almost as big as the dogs, it was incredible to watch. The dogs are incredibly brave and it’s remarkable how many rats they can catch, they just love it.”
He added: “When rats are poisoned it is a horrendous death and it can take up to 48 hours. It’s slow and painful.
“This method is traditional and brings working dogs into good use. At the longest it takes three or four seconds for the Terriers to make the kill.”
