An opossum took refuge in someone’s garage and her nephew shared its pictures on the subreddit r/aww.
The unusual guest, also known as a possum in North America, was homeless when the kind lady let it live in her garage. She gave it the name Hank.
Hank might not be pampered like all the cute kittens and puppies on the subreddit but one thing that can be said for sure is that the gesture by the lady is totally awesome.
The fact that all the pets on the subreddit are generally cute and attractive also led to some negative comments on the social media platform.
A Redditor, for example, commented: “Gotta admit, that’s one ugly cat.”
The Reddit user who posted the picture is from Louisiana. He said that the aged and weakened animal was a frequent visitor at his aunt’s house for around two years.
This winter, the elderly possum started sleeping in the lady’s garage to avoid extreme weather. The aunt, being a hospitable and considerate person, arranged some snacks and a blanket for the possum.
Hank is not technically a pet but he has accepted the garage as a safe place for him where he can take refuge from the weather and predators.
The average life expectancy of Opossums is just two to three years which means that Hank has a very short period of life left.
While the Louisiana resident could not help the possum avoid imminent death, she made sure that he spends his last days in a warm place, with no fear of predators.
Some comments on the Reddit post having Hank’s photo told of the benefits of letting possums live in a house.
Possums have a very sharp skill of recognizing and capturing a number of pests like ticks and bugs. They train themselves throughout their life to become better predators of the pests.
According to wildlife experts, possums can eat bugs, slugs, garden pests, rotting fruits, and even some deadly snakes.
Having done such a great job for humanity over the years of his life, Hank definitely deserves a comfortable retiring home and a peaceful end.
