Elderly people who passed away at home alone because of coronavirus had not been discovered for up to two weeks.
Many have only been found after neighbors or relatives raised the alarm but others have gone undiscovered for so long that their bodies have started to decompose, doctors revealed.
Doctors said that many cases occurred in London between March and May. The revelation highlights how vulnerable many elderly people can be, especially those who live on their own or isolated.
Dr. Mike Osborn, the chair of the death investigation committee at the Royal College of Pathologists, told The Guardian: “People have lain undiscovered during the pandemic for seven to 14 days.
“I’ve seen plenty of such cases like this, where bodies are decomposed, in the Covid outbreak and also done postmortems in ‘query Covid’ cases (where the disease was suspected).”
Dr. Osborn added that if decomposition has begun, it is difficult to know the underlying cause of death. However, he managed to determine that some deaths were caused by coronavirus.
During coronavirus pandemic, medics have certified the deaths of hundreds of people who lived in London. Doctors confirmed Covid-19 was a contributing factor or the cause of death.
Another pathologist in London said that many have been discovered after not being heard from for several weeks. Those people have often been described by neighbors as ‘private’ or ‘reclusive’ and were only discovered after neighbors didn’t see any signs of life.
Many of these deaths were found after their family doctors contacted authorities as they couldn’t reach them.
The head of the Royal College of GPs linked those deaths to the coronavirus lockdown and individuals not seeking medical help when needed.
