Reading his shopping list, a pensioner was hit by the shocking reality as supermarket shelves were stripped bare by panic buyers and selfish customers.
The elderly man was left to wonder where to buy his essentials as stores across the country suffer from waves of uncaring shoppers.
The tear-jerking photo was taken as the increase of stockpiling has hit major supermarkets.
One internet user commented: “I was in that position on Monday scrabbling around trying to buy my normal shopping all because the younger end are selfish and panic-stricken, they are so used to having everything on a plate and for the first time there are shortages. Pathetic.”
Another wrote: “What about all the people who are still at work and cannot get to the shops until evening. I haven’t been able to get any shopping for the last 2 weeks and I am starting to worry.”
A third added: “My son and his girlfriend hang a paper in their apartment building, saying that they help anyone especially the elderly to get groceries! I hope others can do the same!”
Big chains were stepping up rationing measures as people buy more items than usual to prepare for weeks or months of home quarantine.
The increase in demand also resulted in angry situations as shoppers fought over toilet paper and other essentials. Supermarkets are now imposing limits on purchases, from nappies and baby formula to hand sanitizers, milk, paracetamol, pasta and tinned food.
Supermarkets also talked with police forces to get help right away amid concerns that violent customers have left staff fearing for their safety.
These incidents raise worries the nation could see the rise of riots that were foreseen at the beginning of the crisis.
