When it comes to generous people working for a selfless cause, not many can compete with a 100-year-old lady who has been crocheting and donating her works ever since she was 12 years old.
Erma Palmiter is an amazing woman who doesn’t let her age get in her way of gifting others. The centenarian is determined to make a difference every day by donating useful household items and art pieces made by crocheting.
“I started crocheting when I was 12 years old,” Erma told said FOX 17.
“My mother taught me how to do it, and I started making things for her, and different people. She taught me how to quilt too, but I dropped that, it was more interesting to crochet.”
While the centenarian has always been crafting interesting handiworks, she has spent the majority of the time during her younger years teaching kindergarten children. Even though the kind lady isn’t in the classroom anymore, she still helps wherever she can.
“They need some help paying the teacher, paying for the materials that they use to teach the children with,” she said. “I just like children, and the more anyone can educate them, get them going for the rest of their life, I’d like to help.”
And so, she crochets and sells her works locally. “Last year we turned in $5,000,” Erma said. “I’ve already turned in $500 this year.”
The grandmother donates 100% of her earnings to the preschool at the Christ Lutheran Church in White Cloud, Michigan. While people from all around the world want Erma’s products after hearing her story, the elderly lady is unlikely to expand her sales over the international waters any time soon.
“Her typical day, which is every day, she gets up about 9:30 a.m. to have breakfast and do her little morning routine,” one of Erma’s beloved granddaughters, Kristine Palmiter, revealed.
“By 10:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m. she sits in her chair and crochets and continues to crochet until about 7 o’clock at night.”
Robert, the son of the generous grandmother, added:
“We’ve been absolutely blessed to have her for all these years. She’s really an inspiration for a lot of people. She’s just a joy to be around. And, she’ll whoop you at the card table too.”
Following her story going viral, Erma has been recognized as the Pay It Forward Person of the Month by FOX17 and the Lake Michigan Credit Union. She also received a $300 reward which will most likely be used to pay for the crocheting supplies for the preschool program she’s supporting.
