Tesla boss Elon Musk claims he took four Covid-19 tests in one day and two came back negative and two positive.
The 49-year-old then declared that ‘something extremely bogus is going on’ after different results came back in just one day.
Musk took to Twitter and wrote: “Was tested for covid four times today. Two tests came back negative, two came back positive. Same machine, same test, same nurse. Rapid antigen test from BD.”
But the FDA, which gave emergency authorization to Becton Dickinson’s Veritor Plus system test, says a negative result has to be verified by molecular testing.
Muk then said that he was experiencing ‘typical cold’ symptoms and warned others of the contradictory results, writing: “If it’s happening to me, it’s happening to others. I’m getting PCR tests from separate labs. Results will take about 24 hours.”
According to the documentation for the BD test, even a positive result “indicates the presence of viral antigens, but clinical correlation with patient history and other diagnostic information is necessary to determine infection status.”
For the negative result, it warns: “Negative results are presumptive. Negative test results do not preclude infection and should not be used as the sole basis for treatment … It is recommended that these results be confirmed by a molecular testing method.”
Many Twitter users joined Musk’s discussion and questioned the results’ inaccuracies. One person wrote: “Could this be why we’ve been seeing such a major spike?”
Antigen tests can give results in a matter of minutes and allow contract tracing to start sooner but they are not as accurate as the ‘gold standard’ PCR tests in labs, the Daily Mail reported.
