It’s not every day that one gets a direct invitation from a company’s CEO for a job interview.
And if it comes from billionaire CEO Elon Musk for a chance to work at pioneering electric car company Tesla, you could say it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. Sure, it’s not a job offer but the recommendation would certainly open the door wide.
However, when Elon Musk offered an interview for one Redditor, the guy actually turned the tycoon down, saying they really didn’t like relocating.
The Redditor who goes by the handle GreenTheOnly had posted on the forum a few months ago with a detailed look at the Tesla Hardwear 3 self-driving upgrade, due to be installed in the upcoming Model S and X vehicles.
While most of what GreenTheOnly wrote would go over our heads, in an ELI5 (Explain Like I’m Five, in Reddit-speak), one other user summarized the post by saying: “Hw3 is coming. It will have fast dedicated neural net processors. The current firmware does not do much more with this increased power. That will presumably come in future updates.”
GreenTheOnly’s original post reached Musk who was impressed enough to offer the user a job interview at Tesla.
He tweeted: “Reddit is hardcore. Mostly correct analysis. Comments so dark…”
But he followed up with the clincher, as he added: “Anyone who did this analysis should interview at Tesla.”
Most people would probably have jumped at the chance without a second thought but GreenTheOnly had a few questions of his own.
He wrote: “What’s the ‘work from home’ policy? Are the layoffs done with for now?”
And as users began to comment on Reddit to flag Musk’s offer, GreenTheOnly said: “Yeah, I saw. Thanks. I was already approached by Tesla recruiting in the past.”
One other user commented that Musk wanted GreenTheOnly to “join Tesla,” but was corrected: “Nope, only interview is on offer it looks like (which is a smart move, actually).
“Also I really hate being laid off. And I don’t want to move anywhere and I heard Tesla has a strict ‘must move to a Tesla location’ policy.”
In the comments section, GreenTheOnly also added: “You cannot even begin to imagine how much it would cost to move me to California.”
One person suggested he propose working from home to Tesla but GreenTheOnly said he didn’t think he was good enough to get whatever he wants.
He wrote: “If they really wanted me, they’d have approached me by usual channels since they know who I am.”
Still, being offered a job interview by Elon Musk himself must make for some pretty cool bragging rights.
