Elon Musk and singer Grimes recently had a baby and their newborn son’s name broke the internet due to its uniqueness.
It is reported by an expert that the name X Æ A-12 would not be legally accepted in the state of California.
According to David J. Glass, a family law attorney, the birth certificate in California only allows 26 letters of the alphabet. As per Glass, who holds PhD in clinical psychology, the name is not illegal but it would not be accepted.
He noted that in the Golden State, one can use only the 26 letters of the English language in their baby’s name. He added that numbers cannot be added.
Even umlauts, Roman numerals, numbers, or other emojis and symbols cannot be used. An apostrophe, for the name like O’Connor, is, however, accepted.
Glass said that even if the couple filled the birth certificate of baby X Æ A-12 at the hospital with dashes, symbols, and odd numbers, it would be submitted but rejected, and then they will be asked to submit the name again.
But Grimes and Musk can appeal rejections from the officials in California over the name of the child. Glass said that they have the opportunity to appeal rejection from birth certificate application but it is unlikely that it would be granted.
The Birth Registration Handbook of California’s Public Health-Vital Records reflected these points. As per the handbook’s Article 3, Section 6 of the California State Constitution, the language accepted is English. This was added in 1986 and formally cemented English as the official language of California.
The section reads that it intends to protect, strengthen, and preserve the English language and the Legislature will make no law that ignores or diminishes the English language’s role as a common language of California.
