But a couple managed to capture the big cat on their camera after they spotted it in Cambridge.
46-year-old Jamie Newby and his fiancée, Hayley spotted the elusive Fen Tiger in a field in Ipswich.
The couple said the big cat had a ‘scary, evil face’ and was ‘bigger than a Labrador’. The couple first thought it was a Muntjac deer but later they realized it was a big cat.
Jamie Newby told CambridgeshireLive: “Our first thought was maybe it was a Muntjac deer as we had seen one the day before in the same field. It was my fiancée who said that it looked like a big cat. We grabbed some binoculars the owner had left in the room.”
“I grabbed my camera and used the zoom function to film what you can see in the footage. Sadly my memory card was only 2GB and the footage maxed the card out and my camera shut down as it pounced on or killed something.”
“Only after searching online did we see it could have been a Scottish Wild Cat. The size of it instantly struck me. I’d seen a dog walker walking a Labrador in the same exact spot the day before and the cat looked bigger than that,” he added.
His fiancée, who doesn’t like cats, said it had a scary, evil face.
Jamie said: “I’ve read a little more about them and they do hunt early between 6-7am and they like staying on the perimeter of fields. My fiancée said it had a scary, evil face. She’s never liked cats!”
