One of the top tourist attractions of Memphis, Tennessee is the Graceland estate – the mansion in which the legendary Elvis Presley resided for 20 years until the time of his death by 1977.
Overnight, the still popular estate was defaced with various graffitis by protestors.
The graffitis were made by some members who participated in the anti-racist protests as part of the Black Lives Matter movement. Throughout the beautiful stone wall that surround’s ‘The King’s’ household was lathered with these thick black and orange graffitis.
The words that were inscribed to the property are the slogans that the protestors have asked for, such as ‘Black Lives Matter’ and ‘Defund The Police’. Some included much coarse language, such as one that read ‘F— Trump’.
The damage that the protestors caused overnight was discovered by the employees of the estate, which also serves as a museum for the legendary musician. This act of vandalism is especially distasteful because it was sprayed over the messages that Presley’s fans have left on the wall since 1982.
Not surprisingly, fans of Elvis expressed their anger and disgust at what the protestors did. One local resident, who said that she and her husband realized what happened as they drove in the morning, said she was absolutely shocked by what she was witnessing.
Bill Stanley, Presley’s step-brother, also commented on the vandalism that he said “was uncalled for”. He went so far as to say that it is one of the saddest days of his entire life, probably second only to the very day when Presley passed away.
Of course, not everyone condemned the action. For instance, a local Democrat said no one was enraged when millions of other people left their marks on the walls. He continued that what made people uncomfortable was not so much the graffiti as much as the message being conveyed.
The museum has yet to release an official statement regarding what happened over night. All that could be confirmed is that workers equipped with washers showed up to the estate and cleaned the graffitis before noon on Tuesday.
Graceland was not the only local landmark that was defaced by the protestors. Levitt Shell, where Elvis held his first paid concert, was also vandalized with the same messages.
