Simon Goldsmith – a postman and Elvis Presley impersonator – was banned from the tribute competition because people would have laughed at him.
Simon, who was left heartbroken after he was turned down, said he can sing and put on a really good show.
He said: “I might look a bit rubbish, but I can sing and put on a really good show. I just want to do something different and to be fun.”
“You see a lot of Elvis tributes who just go through all his tracks but I do something different. When I saw the quality of some [of the acts that] got in I thought ‘I could have done that’.”
Simon said he would have donated the £1000 prize from the competition in Ipswich, Suffolk, to a hospice but he was banned from taking part in the competition.
Simon then decided to raise funds on his own and within three days, he was able to raise £2600.
However, the organizer of the King’s Crown Elvis competition, Andy Sexton insisted that he took the right decision.
He said that the competition is not a comedy show but serious competition. They select only professionals between 10 to 12 to enter.
He also said that Simon would have got laughed off stage if he had taken part in the competition.
Andy Sexton said: “Our Elvis competition is not a comedy show. These guys are professionals. I choose between 10 to 12 to enter and they have to be the best.”
“I didn’t want people laughing at him. He would have got laughed off the stage and I didn’t want that for him, I’m not a cruel guy. This is a serious competition and people pay money to get into it and watch it.”
