Rapper Eminem, also known as Marshall Bruce Mathers III, celebrated 12 years of sobriety by sharing a photo of his badge in his Twitter and Instagram posts.
“Clean dozen, in the books! I’m not afraid,” the 47-year-old announced as he shared the picture with his followers on April 21.
Previously, the rapper, songwriter, and producer opened up about his past addiction and admitted he “was taking so many pills that I wasn’t even taking them to get high anymore.”
“I was taking them to feel normal. Not that I didn’t get high. I just had to take a ridiculous amount,” Eminem told the Rolling Stone back in 2011.
“I want to say in a day I could consume anywhere from 40 to 60 Valium. And Vicodin… maybe 20, 30? I don’t know. I was taking a lot of sh**.”
Following an overdose and an unsuccessful rehab stint back in 2007, the American rapper sought professional help and devoted himself to sobriety.
Twelve years later, he proudly celebrated his ongoing success with his fans and insisted he’s not afraid.
Back in 2011, Eminem also opened up about the effects sobriety had on his musical life and told GQ that he “realized that the way I am helps with the music.”
“Sporadic thoughts will pop into my head and I’ll have to go write something down, and the next thing you know I’ve written a whole song in an hour,” the rapper said in an interview with GQ.
“But sometimes it sucks, and I wish I was wired like a regular person and could go have a fu**in’ drink. But that’s the biggest thing about addiction: When you realize that you cannot … fu** around with nothing ever again.”
