The Emmy Awards are making headlines this morning but it’s sad to say that it’s not for the best of reasons.
Fans, followers, and notable critics were quick to slam the platform for being unfair after they chose to give all 12 acting awards to ‘white’ performers despite the record-breaking number of diverse nominees to choose from.
According to local media outlets, many people were not happy with the decision and that’s why you’ll find the hashtag “EmmysSoWhite” trending like social media.
A total of 49 non-white performers received nominations and many had high hopes of winning. However, it was shocking for many to see their hard work not being given due credit or acknowledgment by the platform.
Alongside fans, plenty of actors, as well as activists, took this opportunity to raise their voice on the matter, deeming it highly disgraceful and unfair.
Some reports reveal that there were some actors of color who really hoped to make it big this year by winning an award for their acting performance. However, the bitter reality of the matter revealed that it was not going to be the case as the ‘whites’ definitely stole the show.
All 12 leading as well as supporting actor awards went to White performers in categories ranging from drama and comedy to limited series too.
In the same way, there was plenty to went ahead to mention how they felt the Emmy Awards were certainly moving in a backward direction with actions like these.
Some notable names that were expected to win big time this year included the late actor Michael K. Williams who delivered an astounding performance for the film Lovecraft Country. Similarly, many hoped Rege- Jean Page would also be acknowledged for his performance in Bridgerton but he also came up short, leading to disappointment across the boards.
What are your thoughts on this year’s Emmy Awards? Do you think it was fair or not?
