A 21-year-old hotel employee worked 32 hours straight to help guests trapped during flood in the area.
Satchel Smith usually works one day a week at Homewood Suites by Hilton in Texas as he is a college student. However, he had to put an extreme amount of overtime when heavy rain caused intense flooding and disrupted travel for his coworkers and guests.
Speaking about what happened, Smith said to KBMT: “I got to work about 3 p.m. Wednesday [Sept. 18] and it had been raining the whole day, but it wasn’t flooding yet.”
He was supposed to finish his shift that day at around 11 pm. However, the worker who was about to take over for him sent a message to let him know she couldn’t make it.
As the storm intensified during his shift, he and 90 hotel guests were trapped inside because of intense flooding.
With no one else on duty, Smith manned the hotel alone for 32 hours.
“Then the morning came around, and I was the only one there and everyone was expecting breakfast,” he said to KBMT. Even though he was the only staff, one of the guests helped and severing breakfast became a team effort.
“I’d never worked in a kitchen,” he admitted to CNN. “I’m not really a good cook.”
During dinner time, Smith and other guests worked together to cook chicken pasta for everyone.
“We also invited some people from other hotels to come eat because they didn’t have any food,” Smith told KBMT.
Finally, another employee arrived on Friday morning but Smith decided to stay and help.
Angela Chandler, one of the hotel guests, wrote on Facebook: “Satchel has been here all night. His coworkers couldn’t make it to work so he stayed. He has manned the phones, answered each of our questions, ensured that we have had a hot cup of coffee or tea, and helped serve us a hot breakfast. He has handled this situation with grace, kindness, and a beautiful smile on his face.”
