Many countries in this world are indulged into this sin of dog eating.
Major countries such as China, Switzerland and South Korea have a long history of the practice of cooking and eating dog meat.
As the world is moving forward, people realize that it is their responsibility to take care of those who cannot speak for themselves. South Korea has taken one significant step.
A group of charity workers yesterday managed to force shutdown the notorious Gupo dog meat market in Busan. Eighty-five dogs were rescued from the canine meat market. These rescued dogs have been transported to temporary shelters to recover from their trauma.
Most of the rescued dogs were Korean Jindo Mix. These dogs had lived in cages all their life. They were, in fact, born and bred for slaughter on dog farms.
Humane Society International’s (HSI) dog meat campaigner, Nara Kim said that the scene of the dog market was upsetting. The dogs were displayed alive in cages so that the customer could choose for his own.
The chosen dog was then electrocuted to death in front of all the other animals. This electrocution generally took about five minutes. Some are also said to have taken up to about 20 minutes.
Park Won-soon, the mayor of Seoul, has also vowed to shut down all dog butcheries in the city.
Though South Korea has a long way to go in achieving a friendly environment for their dogs, this remarkable step will serve as a stepping stone towards that path.
