The days of following strict dress codes at work are starting to disappear in many industries.
However, some habits really die hard and in male-dominated areas, women wanting to express themselves at work are seen as ‘unprofessional’
Stephanie E. Suarez was surprised when an engineer messaged her on LinkedIn. He criticized how she looked like and even told her that she looked like a ‘waiter of Midtown.’
“I just made my appointment for my second tattoo and gonna redye my fire engine red hair this weekend. Got yelled at by an engineer at Chevron via linkedin for it.
“In my opinion commenting on someone’s appearance is more unprofessional than what I have on my arms or hair,” she wrote on Twitter.
Their conversation sheds some light on issues many women scientists encounter. Instead of letting their work speak, some men expect females to justify themselves through the way they look.
One Twitter user shared: “I got sacked for having tattoos once. I have more tattoos and a better job…”
Another wrote: “#1- Your hair looks fabulous and I wouldn’t classify it in the unprofessional look. #2- Anyone who hires on looks instead of your amazing skills, you probably wouldn’t want to work for anyways. #3- I bet people just love to be around him.”
A third said: “Aside from anything else, that’s a pretty standard hair color. You’d get away with it under most ‘no unnatural hair dye’ dress codes.”
Someone else tweeted: “My favorite part is when he tells YOU not to be rude!”
