Storm Dennis was quite a rage in the United Kingdom with heavy rains and strong winds affecting the lifestyle, especially in the coastal areas.
While the bad weather didn’t harm anyone, it did throw out a mysterious ship to the coast of Ireland.
According to the reports, the ship was abandoned since 2018, and it washed up in the coast. For the past two years, the MV Alta cargo ship was drifting in the sea with no crew.
Officials believe that the ship must have originated from Tanzania before it was spotted in Ballycotton, County Cork on February 16, Sunday.
As per the Irish Coast Guard, a 10-man crew was rescued from the 77-meter MV Alta freighter after it became disabled in October 2018.
The freighter had just left the Greek port and was on its way to Haiti when some functional issues came up. As a result, the cargo ship drifted in the ocean for almost 20 days before the crew members were rescued.
The 10-man crew started running low water and food, and this is when they radioed for help.
Fortunately, everyone from the MV Alta cargo ship was rescued, but the freighter was left to wander in the sea. Following the powerful Storm Dennis, the ship has crashed against the rocks of Ballycotton.
When asked, John Tattan, Ballycotton RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager said that incident like this is one in a million. He said that the ship had come all the way from the African coast to the Irish coast. He has never seen anything abandoned like this before, he added.
The abandoned ship is under scrutiny as the officials are trying to determine whether it poses a threat to the local environment.
Hopefully, the ship poses no threat to the environment as well as the locals.
