A gunman has been arrested at Everglades National Park in Florida after the authorities placed the park on lockdown following reports of an active shooter.
Shutting down the national park in Flamingo, Florida, the officials confirmed that a gunman started shooting at park rangers on Sunday evening as they urged visitors to shelter in place.
“Active shooter incident happening at Everglades NP. Main park road (SR 9336) closed for public safety. Visitors/residents in Flamingo should shelter in place,” Everglades National Park revealed in a statement at 8.15 pm.
“Suspect is a 33 y.o. white male. Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies are coordinating the response.”
Less than thirty minutes later, at 8.41 pm, the park officials confirmed that the shooter was still at large and that no injuries have been reported so far.
“There are no injuries to report as of now. Suspect fired at park rangers unprovoked. Suspect is still at large,” they added.
At 9.07 pm, the officials confirmed that the shooter has been apprehended but urged the visitors to avoid the area while the case remains under investigation.
“Suspect has been located and is in custody. Incident has been resolved. Press release to follow soon. Please continue to avoid the area,” Everglades National Park tweeted in an update.
As of this writing, it is not clear who the gunman is or what his motives were. So far, no fatalities or injuries related to the shooting have been reported.
