Recently, a behavioral specialist who works in an autism unit found an experiment on the C.
S. Mott Children’s Hospital website, called “How clean are your hands?” and decided to use the experiment to teach everyone about germs.
Jaralee Metcalf, a behavioral specialist, along with her coworker Dayna Robertson, a special education teacher, put five slices of bread in separate bags.
“We chose this experiment because we had been learning about decaying leaves and mold and flu season was approaching. We decided it would be an awesome mold experiment to learn about germs by using moldy bread!”, Jaralee Metcalf told Bored Panda.
The first slice was put untouched, the second one was touched by dirty and unwashed hands, the third one was touched with washed hands, the fourth one was touched by kids who used hand sanitizer.
And, the last one was wiped on the classroom Chromebooks.
Within a couple of days, mold started forming on some of the slices.
The experiment worked as everyone could see the shocking results. They decided to be careful and practice better hygiene.
“The students were very involved, as they usually are with hands-on experiments! Since the results were so shocking, the students and staffs have taken a very serious turn toward better hygiene. Students from different classrooms in the entire school have come to our class to look at the moldy bread and learn about handwashing”, Metcalf said.
“If you send your child to school when they are sick, they put everyone at risk. Including teachers and our families! I’d like to urge parents to keep their sick children at home!”, Metcalf added.
Washing your hands is so important for maintaining hygiene and this experiment is proof. The results are definitely shocking but we should learn from this and try to practice better hygiene.
