Facebook has just changed its company name to ‘Meta’ in a bid to distance itself from the increasing number of scandals.
CEO of the organization, Mark Zuckerberg, made the shocking announcement just hours ago, shocking plenty of users from around the globe.
Facing criticism as we speak, the name wasn’t a popular choice as many critics and netizens took to social media to express their concern regarding the term ‘Meta’ and why Zuckerberg would think of choosing that amongst all others.
From today onwards, the parent company has been rebranded to the name ‘Meta’, which signals its investment in ‘metaverse’, Zuckerberg announced.
This is reportedly their new venture in relation to augmented reality as well as virtual world environments, the CEO mentioned during his public announcement to the world.
The news comes as the company is put into deep controversy after whistleblower Frances Haugen’s documents were leaked publicly, further deepening the already scandalous situation.
However, sources mentioned how Facebook’s main flagship social media website, which was originally founded in the year 2004, will continue to keep using its name. Hence, this means ‘Meta’ which stands for metaverse, will be the company’s new parent name and will include social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, sources added.
Meta is currently creating new virtual reality spaces such as Horizon Worlds as a part of its brand new ‘metaverse’ too, mentioned reports.
At the moment, the burning question on so many people’s minds relates to whether or not the name has what it takes to shake off the growing amount of public relations nightmares that Facebook has witnessed in the past and continues to see today.
During the breakthrough announcement, many witnessed workers from the organization pull down a curtain located outside the company’s headquarters in Silicon Valley, which bore the company’s iconic ‘Like’ sign to reveal another new name and its associated logo.
