The fate of a lonely lost duck took a turn for the best after it appeared at the doorstep of a welcoming family, searching for a shelter, during rough weather.

The homeowner provided warmth to the poor bird, named Denzel, to stop him from shivering. Once he was saved from the unforgiving temperature, the host fed him worms to help with the appetite.

Denzel, who’s a mallard drake, showed up to the door of Michael Clewes’ house during a rainstorm in the mid of July. Clewes, a 70-year-old former game-keeper, let the poor bird in and served him some TLC.

His daughter Jessica, who lives just next to him, has been taking care of Denzel every day since.

After the duck recovered and was in a good shape to return to his normal life, he started loving the cozy environment and welcoming attitude of Jessica and decided to become her family member.

Jessica built an outdoor duck house for the cute bird and a little pond for him to play but it looks like the big bird loves more to be indoor.

It’s been four months since the family, from Smallwood, Cheshire, welcomed Denzel to their house.

Denzel loves to watch TV sitting at his favorite spot just next to the fire. He also likes to follow his owners Jessica and her 38-year-old partner Adam Oliver wherever they go in the house.

Jessica who’s a cleaner and has firsthand experience in gamekeeping said of the duck: “We love him to bits. He sees us as parents and we have hand-reared him since he was a baby.

“He sits on my knee at night whilst I watch TV and now it’s cold outside he likes to sit in front of the log burner.

“He’s never ever tried to fly away and he could do at any point really, but this is all he has ever known. I’m not sure he would survive in the wild now.

“I’m not even sure he knows how to be a proper duck.”

Like most of his kind, Denzel loves to roam around in the open during the days but prefers to sleep indoors in a cozy environment.

Even though he’s free to take a nap anywhere in the house, his two most favorite places are near the log burner and on the cozy sofa.

A drawback Jessica and Adam are facing is that unlike dogs and cats, ducks can’t be litter trained so the duo has to go after him, cleaning the floor as Denzel roams around.

Jessica said they are looking to find a lady duck so that Denzel can start a family.

The woman is even planning on making her own duck nursery in the backyard. “I want to keep him forever now,” she said. “We both have an affection for him.

“He must be happy otherwise he would just fly off. He could do if he wanted to but has never even tried.”
