A mother has shared how she faced negative remarks online after she revealed the unique name she has chosen for her son.
Lexis Kelly gave birth in December and named her bouncing, healthy baby boy Koa Henry Langley. She thinks that the name suits her son ‘like a glove’ after discovering that the first name means ‘brave warrior’ in Hawaiian.
But many people online were quick to blast the name as ‘disgusting.’
Taking to TikTok, Lexis said many told her they ‘feel sorry’ for her baby.
“I have been told it’s a disgusting name, that I need to remember I’m naming an adult and not a child,” she said.
“As well as being told that it’s ugly, funny, too girly, too hard to spell, ridiculous, and too hard to pronounce.”
Her video has gained over 640,000 views, more than 24,000 likes, and thousands of comments.
“When I picked an unusual name for my son and everyone constantly asks how it’s spelled or pronounced,” she told her followers.
She also explained that the name holds a special meaning for her after she experienced a difficult pregnancy.
“Despite everything, he came out really healthy, weighing seven pounds, three ounces. He was so brave throughout, so the name matched perfectly.”
But her video received more criticism, with one person writing: “I feel sorry for the children with an unusually spelled name, they have to spell it to others for the rest of their lives.”
Another wrote: “It’s hard for me to imagine meeting a human named Koa, it’s my dog’s name.”
But others defended the mother’s decision and said that Koa was a ‘lovely name.’
“I would much rather have an unusual name for my child than for him to have the same common name as 20 other people in his class when he grows up,” one person wrote.
“I know a baby whose name is spelled ‘Koah’. It’s a lovely name,” another said.
