A furious man has shared how he was left considering a divorce after his wife and mother-in-law gave a different name to their baby.
Taking to Reddit, the man explained that he and his wife had a deal during the pregnancy. If it was a boy, his wife would pick a name for the child. But if it was a girl, it would be his choice.
His wife firmly believed that they were going to have a baby boy so her family and friends gave her blue gifts. Her mother also knitted clothes with the male name she had picked.
But when their baby finally arrived, they were surprised to see a baby girl! The unnamed dad immediately thought of the perfect name for their daughter.
One year later, when he returned home from work, he heard his wife and mother-in-law talking about their daughter and referring to her by a different name.
“When I asked why they were using another name, my mother-in-law said ‘because that’s what we decided to name her’. Then she went on a rant about how it’s unfair that I chose the name and how it’s completely unsuitable for her, etc,” he wrote on Reddit.
That’s when he realized that his daughter found it difficult to recognize her real name because his wife and mother-in-law have been using a different name.
His wife then suggested that they officially change their child’s name and when he refused, a lengthy argument erupted.
“Here’s the worst part. I could be convinced to change the first name but the one she wants is a very odd feminine version of the name she wanted for her son,” he continued. “Imagine using a female version of the name Drake or Thomas. She got angry and left both my daughter and me, and went to her parents.”
He said that his wife’s entire family except his father-in-law were calling him controlling, saying that it was unfair that he chose the baby’s name.
Now, he’s considering a divorce and claims his wife’s behavior is ‘out of left field and creepy.’
People on Reddit were quick to share their thoughts, with one person writing: “Your wife and mother-in-law are engaging in some A-1 quality gaslighting. You and your wife had an agreement and they’re trying to turn you into the bad guy because you’re sticking to it.”
Another commented: “The only person being controlling here is the one trying to insist that twelve months later she gets to change your daughter’s name. To basically the boy’s name she’d chosen. That’s weird, and mildly disturbing.”
