A 32-year-old father was left devastated after he found out that his wife lied to him about the gender of their unborn baby.
The man explained that he never had a strong relationship with his father, so he wanted to ensure that he would have a strong relationship with his son.
His wife, who has been aware of her husband’s ‘deep-rooted desire’ for a son, decided to lie about their baby’s gender to protect his feeling.
The father-to-be said he missed his wife’s early pregnancy appointments due to work trips. When he came back, he was excited to hear that they were expecting a baby boy.
“We invested emotionally and financially: a blue nursery, boy-themed items, even naming him after my late grandfather,” he wrote on Reddit.
“However, a chance remark from her mother disclosed we’re having a girl. My wife admitted she knew from the beginning but didn’t tell me, thinking she was protecting my feelings.
“I was devastated, feeling the weight of past hurts and fresh betrayals.”
The frustrated father went on: “In my pain, I cleared out the nursery and, in a moment I regret, told her mother she wasn’t welcome at upcoming family events, seeing her as part of the deceit.”
He clarified that he still loves his wife and that the way he reacted was due to ‘deep-seated emotions and past traumas.’
Reddit users were quick to take the father’s side, with one person commenting: “I cannot imagine why she thought it would be less painful for you to think you were having a boy and then disappoint you later. Getting your hopes up accomplishes nothing.”
Another said: “She shouldn’t have lied, but it’s quite clear why she did.”
