“I don’t know exactly what kind of firework it was. But it made a pretty big boom,” said Melanie Bennetts, the owner of the home.
She further said that their porch had a bench with pillows and the act could have led to it catching fire.
At the time when this happened, Malanie’s husband was home but he did not answer the call bell. Both the Bennets’ daughters couldn’t recognize who the person lighting up the firework was.
Melanie said there have been incidents of kids egging and toilet-papering their house previously but she did not make a big deal out of it as she realizes kids do silly things all the time.
But this time, it was not just another harmless act of mischief. The woman hopes kids and their parents take note of this incident which had the potential of causing horrific outcomes.
“We live in Southern California where fire is not a joke,” said Melanie.
Fireworks are a source of amusement and are treated as harmless substance but they do have the potential to cause serious injury or loss of property.
In 2017, more than 50 per cent of the injuries related to fireworks included burns, out of which 31 per cent were hand and finger injuries, and 22 per cent were injuries to head, face and ears.
Fireworks can also be a cause of a number of health hazards other than injuries and burns due to the increased levels of carbon monoxide, suspended particulate matter, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide released in the area where fireworks are being displayed.
To ensure safety while using fireworks, the first thing to make sure is to check if the fireworks are legal in the area you’re going to use them in.
As a general rule, the fireworks that come in brown paper are meant for professional use and you should not use them unless you are a professional.
Under no circumstances should minors be allowed to deal with or ignite fireworks on their own.
