When it comes to buying snacks outside one of the most popular tourist attractions, you can already expect to pay a little bit more than the regular price.
However, one family got the shock of their lives when their snacks came to more than $100!
Their order of a ham and cheese sandwich, three hotdogs and four drinks came to €119.34 ($131). The hefty bill also included a service charge of €20.
The family-of-four stopped for a quick bite outside the Vatican as they had been sightseeing all day. So they ordered from an unnamed bar on Via dell Conciliazione by St. Peter’s Square.
In an interview with II Messaggero, the father, Leo Recchia, said: “€22 for each hot dog… Almost €20 for service. To think that the night before we had gone to a restaurant behind the Pantheon: We spent the same, but for a complete dinner.”
The manager of the bar defended their high prices and said that they are already on the menu. Yeah, $22 for chips and a hotdog is insane but when you have checked the menu while sitting outside the Vatican, tourists are ought to know they have it coming.
“We had other cases like this, other complaints, but the prices are on the menu, you can check, also we are near the Vatican, it costs,” said the bar manager.
In a separate incident, two Japanese tourists eating at a restaurant in Rome were also left stunned after being charged €429.80for two plates of spaghetti and fish. The bill also included an €80 service charge.
So, the lesson of this story is to always check the menu and think twice before eating outside the Vatican.
