Most of us spend Christmas Day with our loved ones, and exchanging presents is usually part of the exciting day.
But a woman who told her husband not to buy her a Christmas gift was left furious when he decided not to get her anything at all.
Taking to Mumsnet, she explained that she and her husband agreed not to give each other gifts because money was tight.
“So my husband and I had decided (same as last year) to simply not buy anything for each other. We have young children and I work a very part-time job so income is poor,” she said.
“Don’t get me wrong there’s lots I’d love, even little things, but nothing I really need at all.
“However, last week husband said to me, ‘I’ve bought myself something and you’re not allowed to be cross’ – I never am if he buys something anyway, it’s his business.”
Her husband then said that he bought wireless headphones for around $200 and she said it was okay because he likes them for exercise.
But when he revealed that he also spent money to buy gifts for co-workers, she became furious.
“Should I be annoyed that he’s willing to spend this on himself and work colleagues, but nothing on his wife?” she asked.
“For the record, I have gotten him a small present, something I know he needed. But I’m certain I won’t get anything nor is he expecting anything in return.”
Mumsnet uses were quick to share their thoughts, with one person commenting: “Tell him that if he can afford that, he’s changed the goalposts, and actually you would like to exchange gifts. Better to be direct than have your hopes dashed on Xmas morning.”
Another wrote: “I think you should stop making agreements not to swap presents if you’re going to keep getting him something, but knowing he will stick to it and get you nothing.”
