A woman who went to a restaurant with her husband and in-laws has revealed how he and his family got mad at her after she refused to pay the entire bill.
Taking to Reddit, the 32-year-old woman said that she recently inherited money from her mother and she’s keeping it in a separate account as she wants to make sure that it will be used properly.
She then noticed that her husband started mentioning the inheritance money more frequently and even expected her to pay for almost everything.
“For New Year’s Eve, my husband and I met up with his family at a restaurant to celebrate,” she wrote.
“It was going fine until I found out that I was expected to pay for everyone at the table. My husband’s mum joked about paying for dinner out of my ‘inheritance pocket’, which made me livid but I showed no reaction.”
She then decided to pay only for the food and drinks she ordered then walked out of the restaurant, leaving her husband and in-laws to pay for the rest.
“They were shouting after me like a crowd and my husband tried to get me to come back but I drove home.”
She continued: “He got back at 3 am and started yelling at me, saying I was pathetic to get up and walk out on him and his family after they relied on me to pay for their food and thought I was gracious enough to do it.”
Her husband also told her that she humiliated him and his family and that her actions caused a huge rift between them.
People on Reddit were quick to show their support for the woman, with one person writing: “Your husband and in-laws are attempting to capitalize on your mother’s death. Keep the inheritance. Ditch the people who think you’re a walking ATM.”
Another said: “They act like you won the lottery and not buried your mother. I’m sorry for your loss.”
A third added: “No one ever has the right to expect someone else to pick up the tab, especially if it wasn’t agreed to upfront. Your inheritance is no one’s business. You don’t owe anyone anything. Your husband and in-laws are shameful.”
