The parents of a young girl with autism were left shocked after receiving a letter from neighbors.
In the lengthy letter, ‘neighbors’ ask the family of 6-year-old Kayla Newton to stop her ‘long periods of shrieking throughout the day.’ They also complained that her episodes are affecting their virtual meetings as many are working from home.
“We reach out to you in the spirit of compassion, to address our concerns about the well-being of the neighborhood,” the letter reads.
“As you may or may not be aware, many of us are being affected by your daughters long periods of shrieking throughout the day. Please know that we have empathy for your very difficult situation.
“Unfortunately, we are quite disturbed by this as it has a very real impact on our peace and quiet, as well as the enjoyment of our backyards. Many of us are working from home and are on video call with our clients who can hear this distressing sound.
“We would be appreciative if you could try to reduce the length of time and frequency of these episodes so that we may resume some periods of tranquility that we previously enjoyed.”
In an interview with Fox News 8, Kayla’s mother Monica Newton said: “It’s very hurtful to read that stuff. This is our child. If we could help her we would.
“For somebody to say that she’s shrieking and it’s ruining their life, what about her life? What about her? She’s a freaking child, she’s 6-years old.”
Monica told CBS 13 that her daughter has non-verbal autism and she cannot vocalize her feelings. She usually communicates through movements and noises, which helps her relax and get her energy used.
However, she and her husband were left stunned to find the neighbors’ letter. They wished that their neighbors could also see things from their perspective.
