A wife has revealed that she gave her mother-in-law a fake key to their new home as she wanted to prove that she can’t be trusted.

However, her husband and his family were left fuming.

“My mother-in-law kept pushing to get an emergency key,” the woman explained on Reddit.

“She promised that she only use it in an emergency but given the fact that she had an emergency key to our old apartment and walked in on us being intimate twice, I just couldn’t trust her,” she said.

In an attempt to expose her, the woman sent her mother-in-law a fake key to their home.

“Days (go) by and (at) Christmas dinner MIL angrily called me out on the fact I gave her a fake copy of the house key.

“She shamed me for doing this in front of everyone but in my (defense) I asked her how she found out and she said days ago when she came over while my husband and were out.”

The woman continued: “I reminded her ‘Didn’t you promise you wouldn’t use it unless there’s an emergency? So you tried to get in when there was no emergency and you broke the promise you made to us?’”

However, the mother had a ‘huge meltdown’ and they all had an awkward Christmas day.

“My husband went off on me in the car and said I lied and manipulated and humiliated and exposed his mom and said he wouldn’t have let me get away with it had he known,” she said.

“We had an argument and he is demanding I apologize to his mom for my childish behavior and for ruining Christmas dinner for the whole family.”

People were left divided when she asked if she was in the wrong, with one person writing: “Great job. I cannot understand how your husband would be mad at this.”

Another wrote: “I’d rethink my marriage if my husband put his mother over me.”

A third said: “You should have just said no instead of stooping to her level with these mind games.”
