A millionaire mom has spoken out and defended her decision to gift her children with one stocking each for Christmas.
Shirine Khoury-Haq is the Co-Operative Group Chief Executive Officer, a mother of two, and a businesswoman who earns $1 million a year.
Despite having no financial issues, the 51-year-old entrepreneur insists on giving just one gift stocking to each of her six-year-old twins for Christmas.
As the mother explained, she and her husband spend the majority of their Christmas budget on gifts for struggling children whose parents can’t afford presents instead of spoiling their twins with an “embarrassing” amount of clothes and toys.
Speaking to the Times, the mother said she believes “it just feels like excess” to give children “too many toys” that they will only use once or twice before getting tired of them.
“It just feels like excess, given what’s happening in the world. In good conscience, I can’t do that in my own home,” she said.
The mother also revealed how she and her husband prefer to give one small present to each of their daughters while donating the rest of their budget to “provide presents for children whose parents can’t contribute to the elves.”
“Parents are making choices about whether they eat or their children eat,” Khoury-Haq added while saying the rise in the cost of essentials has resulted in an undeniable living crisis.
After the interview went viral, critics were quick to suggest there’s nothing wrong with buying children more than just one Christmas present.
Others, however, praised the mom for teaching her kids to be humble no matter their background and for refusing to spoil them to ensure that struggling families also get to celebrate Christmas with gifts.
