A mother penned a heartbreaking letter to the ‘complete stranger’ who saved her life by donating their heart.
30-year-old Nicolette Somers from Detroit, Michigan, is a dedicated mother and a loving wife who needed a life-saving heart transplant after finding out she was suffering from weakness of the heart known as peripartum cardiomyopathy just months after giving birth to her son.
Since the doctors were unable to treat her condition due to its severity, Somers was told she would require a new heart and likely have to wait up to a year to find a suitable donor.
Thankfully, the family received positive news just nine days later after a suitable heart donor was found.
Following her heart transplant in 2020, the young mom was forced to spend weeks in recovery and missed her son’s first Christmas.
This year, however, the family was able to spend the holiday together, with Nicolette expressing her gratitude to the person who saved her life in a tear-jerking open letter.
“Because of your selfless act to become an organ donor, you gave the greatest gift anyone could give.
You gave me the gift of life.
Because of you, I’m able to be in my son’s life and I will always tell him about the complete stranger who gave his mummy a new heart and saved her life. I think about you daily and I hope I’m making you proud,” the 30-year-old said. She added: “Last Christmas I was given the ultimate gift – the gift of life. Without it, I wouldn’t be able to watch my son grow up. I will be forever grateful for the selfless act of my donor and their family.
“It’s so hard knowing that for me to live my life, someone else’s had to end, but I am doing my best to make the most of the incredible opportunity they have given me. It really felt like my Christmas miracle.”
Though the young mom admitted she doesn’t know anything about her heart donor’s family background, she hopes to be able to meet their family in person to thank them for being given a second chance at life.
