A woman has shared her dilemma online after her mother-in-law decided to ‘gift’ her unborn baby her middle name as part of a family tradition but she did not want it.
Taking to Reddit, the pregnant mother explained that she and her husband have already decided to name their daughter ‘Daisy May.’
She also said that the name May has a personal significance to her and even though they kept it a secret, her husband John accidentally told his mother their baby’s first name ‘Daisy.’
“Well, at this tea party, Molly (my mother-in-law) gave me a large wrapped gift box along with a speech about how it’s a tradition in John’s family that if the eldest son has daughters, the grandmother of those daughters gifts them their middle names.
“Excuse me, what? I’m surrounded by like 50 women and they’re all nodding. I don’t have the spoons for this, so I just open the box. There are a bunch of blankets and stuff with ‘Daisy Flora’ embroidered on them.”
The mom-to-be was left frustrated as her baby’s name was no longer a secret. “I go through the motions to get to the party’s end. Molly says that I seem upset. I tell her that John didn’t tell me of the tradition and that I want to discuss it with him before saying anything further. Molly was unenthused by my response.”
The mother asked internet users if she should stick to her husband’s family tradition, adding that her mother-in-law was beyond upset after she told her that she didn’t like the name Flora.
One Reddit user commented: “My family also has a tradition, which is that the parents, and only the parents, name the child. Sorry.”
Another wrote: “It’s your child, you shouldn’t feel pressured to stick to a family tradition, especially when your partner wasn’t even aware of it.
“To already have the name embroidered on things was also weird and put you in an awkward position. Congratulations on your pregnancy, don’t let anyone tell you what you’re allowed to name your child.”
