A pregnant woman has sought advice on the internet after being forced to deal with a mother-in-law who refuses to acknowledge her pregnancy.
As an unnamed lady revealed in her Reddit post, she and her husband are about to become parents for the first time.
While the news of their pregnancy was met with great enthusiasm and excitement from her family’s side, the reaction was quite different when the parents-to-be announced the new addition to their family in front of the woman’s mother-in-law.

When we told them they were overjoyed, and couldn’t stop talking about it.point 64 | They constantly check-in to see how I’m feeling, keep sending me links to things they want to buy the baby, are gushing to their friends, etc,” the mom-to-be wrote.point 204 | 1
“We of course also shared with his family. To say the reaction was underwhelming would be an understatement. I don’t expect them to react the same way as my family, everyone is different.”
She added: “However, when we announced it, the first thing my mother-in-law said wasn’t congratulations.point 387 |
It was ‘Is my daughter pregnant? Is she going to surprise us soon?’ She has proceeded to not ask about my pregnancy at all, and if it comes up, she dismisses any symptoms I’m having and brings it back to her daughter and how she can’t wait for her to have a baby.point 219 | 1
“She keeps asking, ‘Can you talk to her and see what her plans are? I can’t wait for my grandchild any longer!’ referring to her daughter’s future baby. She went as far as telling me I should start thinking of what I want to do for my sister-in-law’s baby shower in the future because I should be the one to host. She’s not even pregnant!”
As the mother-to-be added, the rift between her and her in-laws continues growing because of the mother-in-law’s refusal to acknowledge her pregnancy and the baby growing inside her.
To rid themselves of unnecessary stress, the couple even went as far as considering cutting all ties with the man’s family.
“Am I the a**hole in this situation? I feel like I am expecting too much from this woman, but a little bit of human decency while I grow a human that is related to her would be nice,” the woman asked.
“She sickens me. My husband and I have been entertaining the idea of not allowing her to meet our baby once they come in a few months. I feel like I’m weaponizing my child, but I can’t imagine how she’d treat them that she doesn’t give a flying f**k now.”
After asking Reddit users for advice, the mother was quick to receive loads of support from people who were baffled by her mother-in-law’s actions.
“You’re not weaponizing, you’re safeguarding! This woman sounds absolutely awful,” someone wrote.
“Remember all this when she demands time with your baby. Your mother-in-law is already picking favorites. She’s not entitled to your baby,” another suggested.
