A mother-of-two has sparked a lengthy debate after revealing that she often regifts Christmas presents every year, especially if she has no use of them.
33-year-old Charlotte Bordewey said she receives presents that she would never use so it is better to give it to someone who would really use it instead of letting it go to waste.
Even though she doesn’t drink any alcoholic beverages, she has received bottles of wine over the years and she realized it was time to do something about them.
She started regifting items when someone gave her a shirt that she knew she could no longer wear.
“I was too embarrassed to say ‘actually I’m now two sizes bigger than this’. That’s probably where it started,” she said.
She also shared that there was a year when one of her kids received three of the same present.
“Rather than them go to waste, we pass them on to people who I know will actually use them,” she told the Mirror.
“It just makes sense. None of this is to say I’m ungrateful. I’m not. If you regift, there is more chance it will be appreciated and used,” she said.
Charlotte said she stays silent about thinking of regifting something as she doesn’t want to upset the giver. But when it comes to her family and very close friends, she’s tells them the truth.
“There are people I know I can say ‘I’m sorry, I don’t like this,’” she said. “And they would fully appreciate it as it would mean that they have wasted money on something someone didn’t like. However, there are some people you would just never say that to.”
Charlotte also said that there should be no shame in regifting as it helps keep expenses low.
“This year I’ve had no issue giving and receiving second-hand gifts. There shouldn’t be any stigma to that and there shouldn’t be for passing gifts on,” she added.
