A devastated family is forced to pay for the damaged scooter after their 20-year-old son died in a moped accident in the Philippines.
British holidaymaker Jack Whitelaw, from Bracknell, Berkshire, died on the island of Siargao after he crashed into a tree that had nails sticking out of it.
Jack rented a motorcycle from a hostel which he crashed into a tree before dying.
After his tragic death, the hostel asked the grieving family to pay for the damaged motorcycle.
Jack’s father Paul received the message from the Lukay Resort hostel that read: “We just wanted to ask news as the bike is still at the police station as of today. Sorry to bother you with that.”
His father was left shocked and accused the hostel of allowing his son to hire a motorcycle despite not having a license.
He replied to them: “You gave him a motorbike without a license and as soon as I have finished getting him home, I’m going to get a Philippines lawyer and sue for what you did to him.”
“Philippine law says you MUST have a license to use one. Why would you give one? My son paid with his life.”
The hostel has now apologized for asking to pay for the damage and felt responsible for the incident even though they feel they did not do anything illegal.
Talking about Jack, his father said that he will forever remain in their memories as he was their very own Peter Pan.
He described him as a generous and kindhearted soul who always made other people smile.
He said what happened to Jack was avoidable. He had no license and should have avoided riding a moped.
