A wife was given just 15 minutes to say goodbye to her husband before he died of the deadly coronavirus and his children couldn’t even see him before his death.
Grandfather and dad-of-four Keith Parker, who only had one lung, chronic asthma, and diabetes, started showing coronavirus symptoms on April 6.
His stepdaughter Taylor said: “He became ill Monday (April 6) and we called an ambulance as we knew he was high risk. But because he was breathing fine they won’t take you in just in case you don’t have it and you could get it in the hospital.”
“They said if he is struggling to breathe then don’t be afraid to call again.”
After a few days, his health deteriorated as his face turned grey and his lips were blue.
He was rushed to a hospital where he was put on a ventilator.
The doctor said there’s nothing they could do to save him and they will contact them when it is needed.
They got the call just three hours after they put him on the ventilator and said only his wife could spend 15 minutes with him to say goodbye.
Keith’s wife of 15 years, Joanna, wore a gown and mask and was taken into a coronavirus ward where she spent 15 minutes with him.
His wife described the moment as ‘horrible’ and said it was something out of the films.
After spending 15 minutes with her husband, Joanna was told Keith would live only for a few more hours.
Keith died just hours after his wife visited him at Queen’s Hospital in Essex. He has left behind his wife, four kids, and a grandchild.
Taylor said: “It was the hardest thing she has ever had to do. Mum came out and in the car, she was sobbing. They just said ‘You have to wait for the call’, they said it could be hours.”
She said when Keith was admitted to the hospital, they thought nothing of it as he had been in and out of the hospital a lot last year.
Taylor said they had no idea they were seeing him for the last time.
