Singer Sinead O’Connor has paid tribute to her 17-year-old son as she wore bright colors to his Hindu funeral.
The ceremony at Newlands Cross Cemetery and Crematorium in West Dublin was attended by 50 mourners, including Shane’s father Donal Lunny.
The 55-year-old Irish singer took to Twitter and wrote: “We just said goodbye to our beautiful angel, Shaney. Very lovely Hindu ceremony. Shane will have loved it.”
The grieving mother, who changed her name to Shuhada Davitt, continued: “He was always chanting ‘Om. Shanti,’” referring to the mantra meaning ‘om, peace.’ “I put a few packs of fags in the coffin for him in case there’s no in heaven. He’ll have loved that too. Om. Shanti.”
She also shared a link to a mantra that had been playing for Shane ‘all week.’
Last Saturday, Sinead confirmed that her son had taken his own life after he escaped from a hospital while on a suicide watch.
“My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God,” she wrote last week.
“May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace.”
The 17-year-old was one of Sinead’s four children, along with Yeshua Francis Neil Bonadio, Roisin Waters, and Jake Reynolds.
The singer took to Twitter and shared a Bob Marley song which she dedicated to her son, writing: “This is for my Shaney. The light of my life. The lamp of my soul. My blue-eye baby.
“You will always be my light. We will always be together. No boundary can separate us.”
