Albinism is considered to be a curse and people with the condition fear that someone would someday murder them brutally.
Before going deep in the topic, let us know what Albinism actually is.
Albinism is a rare genetic disease that affects the pigmentation in a human’s body. The disease can cause absence of melanin in the skin, pigmentation in hair and eyes as well. People suffering from the disease generally have skin and hair without any color and the eyes are generally crystal clear.
While this might sound fun but it is not. The disease makes the skin vulnerable to the risk of getting cancer. People suffering from the disease generally have no color in their eyes, which makes many of them visually impaired or completely blind.
The disease is not popular in many parts of the world as a disease. It is popular as a curse because of orthodox belief. It is believed that the people having the condition are cursed by the god and if they should be killed if they cannot be cured.
A South African family suffering from the same condition has finally spoken up on the topic. All the 5 members of the family are suffering from Albinism and are scared of the murderers.
Themba, (54), father and the head of the family explains their situation. He says, “We live in a township near Cape Town and it is comparatively safer here. People suffering from our condition are considered to be cursed and there are so many murderesses out in the world who are seeking to kill us.”
He says he is not making all this out on his own as in earlier this year, a 15-month-old girl and a 13 years old girl were kidnapped in order to be treated and later they both were found dead.
he says that he is happy with his family in the country as people are more positive here as compared to other African countries. Although, they still have to face discrimination and the government of the country should take steps against it.
he lives with his wife and 3 children. All his children suffer from the same condition as him as the disease is genetic.
