Woman Furious After Her Husband Called Her ‘Childish’ Just Because She Got Upset Over Comments Made By Him And Her Mother-In-Law

A woman has shared how her husband and mother-in-law both made fun of her after she gained weight.

Taking to Mumsnet, the woman from the UK said that she had gone up two dress sizes since having children. Even though her weight is normal, her mother-in-law still makes hurtful comments which her husband always laughs at.

“For a bit of background – before I had children I was a size 10. After children, I’m a size 14 and I have my wobbly bits and my main exercise is walking, where I do around 15,000 steps a day,” she wrote.

“My mother-in-law has known me since I was a size 10, and my husband married me when I was skinny,” the woman continued.

“My husband never says anything about my weight. However, when he’s around his mom he seems to think it’s fine to have a giggle when she makes comments directed at me.

“A few weeks ago, my husband mentioned his mum’s scales were broken and she said ‘obviously something heavier than 12 stone has been bouncing on them’, and I saw her side eye me. My husband giggled but I said nothing.

“Tonight, my dog was behind the couch and I bent down to get him and I heard her say to him ‘you don’t get many of those to the pound’ and another comment I couldn’t hear.”

The remarks left her upset that she decided to walk out of the room. But instead of comforting his wife, the husband told her she was being ‘childish’ for not understanding that the comments were simply a ‘joke.’

“For me, it’s not. He knows I had nearly suffered from an eating disorder when I was younger, and we were together [at first] I was so scared about getting fat.

“I just feel hurt that he thinks it’s OK to make these jests at me and that it’s me being ridiculous. He didn’t stand up for me at all and I think the fact that he laughed made me wonder what he actually thinks of me.”

People on Mumsnet were sympathetic toward the wife, with many saying that her mother-in-law’s comments were ‘cruel jibes.’

“It was bad enough, but to be called childish and told it was a joke. He is being vile! That is totally unacceptable. I am raging on your behalf,” one person wrote.

“It’s fat-shaming and it’s definitely not okay,” another said.
