A couple has died just hours apart and their devastated family couldn’t even hold a funeral due to coronavirus outbreak.
Professor Liam Fogarty from Maynooth, Kildare passed away after a short illness and after a few hours, his wife Mary died after battling an illness for years.
Professor Liam and his wife Mary, originally from Blackrock, Dublin, used to live in Maynooth, Kildare and have two daughters, Fiona and Sharon.
The family of the couple couldn’t hold a funeral due to coronavirus social distancing restrictions but paid tribute to the couple online.
One of the couple’s relatives wrote: “Together in life, together again in heaven”.
While Athy Parish Priest, Fr. Liam Rigney, told the couple’s daughters that it’s a blessing that they have passed away together and they will be again together in heaven.
Fr. Liam Rigney wrote: “Lord rest Liam and Mary. I so feel for you at the death of both your parents. The death of any loved one at any time is so difficult. Their deaths during the coronavirus pandemic is so much more heartbreaking.”
Dr. Aiden J McLoughlin, formerly of the Department of Industrial Microbiology, UCD, paid condolences to the couple’s daughter, Fiona, and Sharon.
Dr. Aiden said they have known Liam for a very long time and said his contribution to the development of the department and to microbiology will always be remembered.
Elm Park Golf and Sports Club chairman, Seamus Ryan, wrote: “On my own behalf and on behalf of the Club Captains, Management Board, Committees and Staff, I extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the late Liam Fogarty and his late wife Mary.”
Mr. Ryan said Liam will be missed by everyone as he was a loyal member of the club and a great friend.
He served the Club with distinction as Honorary Secretary and Chairman of the Greens Committee for many years and his work benefitted the club to a great extent.
