A father who found himself in financial troubles after losing his job decided to sell his own baby to a stranger.
The upsetting incident took place in China where a migrant worker, who reportedly has two other sons, sold his newborn to a complete stranger for nearly $24,000.
According to the reports, the father of the 40-day-old baby conspired with his wife to sell their child to a 43-year-old woman, Ms. Xu, who was allegedly desperate to start a family of her own.
As Anhui Net reported, the police uncovered the illegal ploy after the woman who bought the child was caught traveling with the newborn on their way from his parents’ province to her home.
After acting suspicious while on a train, the woman was questioned by the police whom she told that she had adopted the baby and paid “nutrition fees” to his parents.
Following an official inquiry, the Hefei Railway Police identified the baby’s biological parents and found out they were both migrant workers who already had two other sons.
As the police reportedly confirmed, the couple has been facing financial difficulties because Liu was unable to get a job amid the pandemic.
Since the parents, Ms. Zhang and Mr. Liu, also didn’t plan on having more children, they decided to sell their newborn and make some money in the process.
Following the botched deal, the baby’s biological parents, as well as the buyer, have been arrested on suspicion of trafficking and selling the newborn and are facing up to ten years in prison.
