A Christmas-loving father was forced to turn off his lights display after angry neighbors verbally harassed him and mocked his daughter with autism.
As 54-year-old Darren Lucas from Govilon, Wales, revealed, it took him and his family 11 months to prepare for an unforgettable Christmas display.
Besides plating 17 trees for the occasion, the father also decorated the house and the yard in hundreds of Christmas lights and stunning props.
According to the father, however, not everyone was pleased with his efforts whereas some neighbors allegedly yelled at him and reduced his daughter with autism to tears after telling her to “speak properly.”
As the 54-year-old explained, some of his neighbors got upset over street parking after people started gathering at his home to see the display.
“Some people can be cruel. Our neighbors are amazing but you get the odd one that does nothing but cause trouble,” Mr. Lucas expressed in his Facebook post.
“They just wanted an argument and constantly abused my children… they reduced my daughter to tears and she don’t usually cry but found the abuse too much.”
According to the family, Darren devoted himself to the Christmas display in an attempt to raise money for charity purposes. Before the argument with neighbors, they allegedly managed to raise $2,000 for One Life Autism Support Group.
Problems started after some of the locals complained they couldn’t park in the street due to the volume of visitors who dropped by the house to see the display.
“We had some complaints residents couldn’t park in the street. We have had members of the public abused and spat at, we have had people rowing with the residents. It is not everyone but a small minority,” Darren added.
“We just feel so sad we have worked all year to do this. All I want to do is get the message out there for autism awareness.”
