A 31-year-old man from Perth who was left heartbroken after his marriage fell apart has committed suicide after not being able to see his kids and feeling that “he had lost everything.
”
Brieze Montiero, the father-of-three, couldn’t see his 9-year-old daughter and sons, aged 11 and 12, since Christmas. After seeing no way out of the mess he found himself in, he sneaked out of the hospital where he was staying and decided to take his own life.
One week prior to his suicide, Mr. Montiero sent a series of distressing messages to Sarah Smith, his new girlfriend, in which he explained what he intended to do and provided her with instructions for his funeral. The man also threatened to kill himself sooner if she was to tell anyone about the messages.
“He felt like he had lost everything and was living a nightmare that was never going to end,” Beverley Bell, the man’s grieving mum, said in an interview with DailyMail Australia.
Speaking of the end of his marriage, Ms. Bell explained that everything fell apart after her son returned from an oil rig job.
“He worked extra to pay for a new pool for his kids. He got back on New Year’s Day. It crushed him. He tried to work on it, but not even a month later he tried to kill himself,” she said.
While the 31-year-old survived his first suicide attempt, his depression has gotten worse in January after not being able to see his children for weeks.
On January 28, he sent another series of haunting messages to Ms. Smith in which he said he was ready to leave the world and give all of his money to his new girlfriend.
“Once I say goodbye to my kids I’m gone, can’t take the pain,” he wrote.
On February 6, Brieze texted his girlfriend one last time and apologized for “ruining” her life. “I won’t be sleeping tonight, not in this world. Sorry for ruining your life,” he wrote in his final message.
Ms. Smith immediately shared the messages with Brieze’s mom who asked the police and the staff of the hospital where her son was being treated to keep an eye on him because he was experiencing suicidal thoughts.
Nevertheless, Mr. Montiero was able to sneak out of the hospital.
“The police took his restraints off and left and he went outside for a cigarette, but then he came back, took his clothes, and left,” his mother added.
“He called his kids to say goodbye and no one ever heard from him again.”
A day after his tragic death, Ms. Bell wrote a touching tribute to her son that read:
“You were my one and only son. You were precious, loved, adored by so many people. I’m so sorry your kids now have to deal with this pain.
“Your Dad, your sister, myself and your beautiful children will miss your voice, your laughter, your trying to sing, we will remember your smile.
“I am sorry we couldn’t fix the damage that was done. Sleep my boychild, rest, you gave your all, no one will ever say your heart was not full of love, you will be my first thought in the morning and last thought at night.”
Ms. Smith also wrote a moving letter addressing the death of her partner.
“Words can not even begin to explain how heartbroken I am. You quickly became my whole world and the love of my life,” Smith wrote.
“You made me feel so happy and I will forever be grateful for all of the amazing memories we got to share together.
“You never failed to put a smile on my face. I will forever love you Brieze and will hold you in my heart for the rest of my life.
“Although we weren’t together for that long, it had been the best 6 months of my life and I will forever be thankful that you showed me I could love again.
“We had such big plans for the future and I was so excited to show you what true love felt like and to start a family together so that you could get the life you always deserved.
“I wish this was all just a bad dream. Rest In Peace Brieze, I hope that one day I will get to see you again.”
