Matt Cox from Ohio filmed his 10-year-old daughter as she walked in the cold.
This served as a punishment after she was said to have repeatedly bullied her classmates on the bus.
As he recorded his daughter from inside his vehicle, Mr. Cox said: “Bullying is unacceptable.” He continued to follow his child as she carried a backpack and a bag down a narrow street. “This is my small way of trying to stop it in my household.”
The video was shared on Facebook and viewed more than 15 million times, provoking an online debate about bullying and parenting.
The father stood firmly behind his decision, and he wrote in a caption coinciding with the video: “Still has all her extremities intact is happy and healthy and seems to have a new outlook on bullying as well as a new appreciation for some of the simple things in life she used to take for granted.
“I know a lot of you parents are not going to agree with this and that’s alright,” he added. “I am doing what I feel is right to teach my daughter a lesson and to stop her from bullying.”
In the daughter’s defense, she told local news outlet WTVG News that she also had been bullied and would treat others well from now on.
Mr. Cox reportedly stopped the punishment after three days in which she was suspended from taking the bus because of repeatedly bullying her classmates.
Even though there are thousands of comments showing their support, many remarks expressed disdain towards the father, saying the apparent ‘irony’ in recording the ordeal.
One Facebook user wrote: “Humiliate her by putting her on Facebook being punished. Irony.”
