Isn’t it adorable to look at a baby sleeping on the top on his or her father’s chest? Surely, it is but waits and ask your doctor is it safe for the baby?
Dr. Sam Hanke who is a pediatric cardiologist by profession was, in 2010 was sleeping with his 4 weeks old son. Charlie, the little boy, was lying on the top of his father’s chest. One of the most secure places on earth for him, right? Wrong. The baby passed away while his father fell asleep. He woke up to find his baby had gone.
The position they were sleeping in is considered to be very unsafe for the babies of such young age.
This syndrome is known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and is very common.
4000 cases are attended every year of this syndrome. The unfortunate generally happens because the little child gets suffocated while sleeping under or over the parent.Doctors who work in the Emergency Room faces many such cases that break their heart.
Soon after Charlie passed away, his parents started “ Charlie’s kids” an organization that educates parents about safety measures to be taken while the baby is sleeping.
No one can look at a child and a father sleeping together and say that the child might be in danger. It looks like he is safe and secure in his father’s arms. This is a myth. The child should never be sleeping around anything that can suffocate them.
