A Christian watchdog group that works in East Africa reported that a 24 year old woman was being treated in a local hospital after her father set fire on her.
Morning Star News, the media watchdog that reported the story, said that this was because she converted to Christianity.
The woman in question is Rahema Kyomuhendo. Media sources report that doctors are treating the burns that are left all over her body, all the way from her neck down to the lower back and legs.
Morning Star News and the Daily Mail reports that the perpetrator behind this crime is Sheikh Hussein Byaruhanga Husain, the father of Kyomuhendo. In Islam, Sheikhs are religious teachers much like the rabbis in Judaism or priests in Christianity.
One source told the Morning Star News that Kyomuhendo’s father used a jerry can to pour fuel all over his daughter before he set the fire to burn his own daughter. Neither this allegation nor the actual ways in which the crime was conducted can be cross-checked as of this writing.
The source explained that Covid-19 and the consequent ban on movement was how Kyomuhendo got to learn about Christianity. She and her father usually live in Western Uganda, but have been staying together away from home in Mbale, Western Uganda.
Although Uganda is a Christian majority country, with more than 80% identifying themselves as Christians, a dense Muslim population resides in the Eastern region where this incident took place.
Kyomuhendo says that she accompanied her father in his business trip when all movement was banned according to the Ugandan government’s measure to stop the spread of the virus. They decided to stay in her aunt’s house that was 300 miles away from where they usually live.
The victim explains that she inadvertently got a glimpse into Christianity when she tuned in to a Christianity radio channel. She then called a family friend that she knew was Catholic to ask questions and guidance.
According to the watchdog group, her father started beating her when he overheard the glee with which Kyomuhendo was discussing Christianity. The source also alleges that if it weren’t for Kyomuhendo’s aunt and their Christian neighbor, she very well may have died because of the attack.
