A devoted father has gone viral after getting a giant tattoo to match his son’s birthmark.

As Canada-based father Derek Prue Sr. explained, his son used to be proud of the birthmark across his torso until recently when he started covering it up.

“He was always proud of his birthmark and then I saw he started to kind of cover it up. I think he was maybe a little bit self conscious about it. I was wanted to get the same thing so he wouldn’t be the only one,” Derek said in an interview with SooToday.com.

Seeing his son struggle with self-confidence, the dad decided to undergo a grueling nine-session procedure to get a large tattoo across his chest and ribs.

“I thought it was going to be a one session kind of thing. But three hours turned into about 30 hours. So it’s been a bit of a process,” Derek continued.

“The first sitting, I think, was close to four hours. And I didn’t really look to see what was going on. So I thought at the end of four hours it was done. So I said, ‘Is it almost done?’ and he said, ‘I’m almost done [with] the outline.’”

As Tony Gibert, the tattoo artist who worked on the father’s inking, revealed, the process was a slow one because there are “very sensitive nerve endings” in that area of the body and numbing treatment had to be applied on numerous occasions.

After nine sessions, Derek’s tattoo was complete and he couldn’t wait to show it off to his son when the family went to a swimming pool.

“I just kind of took my shirt off. He was wearing his shirt. I showed him that I had the exact same mark as him,” the proud dad said. As he explained, his son then followed his lead and was no longer afraid to remove his shirt and show off his birthmark.
