After leading the American efforts against Covid-19 for months, Dr.
Anthony Fauci has gone through a surgery that was likely formed because he talked too much. After removing a polyp from his vocal cord, the 79 year old epidemiologist is said to be recovering from his home.
The news was shared by CNN’s medical reporter Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Gupta shared on his Twitter a series of text messages that the two medical personnels exchanged with each other, in which Fauci told Gupta that he is doing well after the surgery.
Gupta added that doctors have advised Facui to refrain from talking to protect his vocal cords. Polyps are caused by what medical experts describe as ‘vocal abuse’ – speaking too frequently or having to scream out loud too often. In Fauci’s case, his frequent briefings are the likely culprit.
As the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, along with being a member of the White House task force, Fauci gave many briefings and sat for even more interviews. He has also testified in front of congress multiple times to answer questions.
Back in April, he ensured Americans that his own health was fine. When asked about his hoarse voice from an anchor, Fauci said once he stops talking for a while without giving briefings, his voice should return.
However, as the global pandemic continues to stretch for a long period of time, he has never been given the leisure to stop talking. Just last week, he participated in several online meetings and interviews. The most recent event was him talking about vaccines in a George Washington University hosted talk.
Fauci’s speaking schedule was already booked up for the next week as well, including another lecture hosted by UC Berkley. It is likely that he will cancel that engagement as per the recommendations of his doctors.
In his last public event, Fauci commented on whether the Covid-19 vaccine will be mandated. The doctor remarked how the US has never really forced people to be vaccinated.
At the same time, he did acknowledge that portions of the population, such as healthcare workers, may be required to do so. He also added that individual states or local governments may make vaccinations obligatory for children.
